    Scotland Wide Living is built as a set of ready-made pages. When you visit, your browser simply downloads those pages; there is no login, no comment section and no visitor database sitting behind them. Because of that, very little personal data passes through the site at all. This page sets out exactly what does, why, and the choices you have.

    Who looks after your data

    The site is run by the small pen-name team described on our About page. For anything to do with privacy, write to hello@scotlandwide.com and mark your message "privacy" so it reaches the right person quickly.

    What we do not do

    • No analytics package or visitor-counting tool is installed on any page.
    • We do not show advertising or allow advertising networks onto the site.
    • We do not use tracking pixels, social media widgets that follow you, or fingerprinting.
    • We do not sell, rent or trade personal data with anyone.

    Your cookie choice

    The first time you visit, a short notice asks whether you accept the site's single storage item. Whatever you answer is saved in your own browser's local storage so the notice does not reappear on every page. That entry holds only your choice; it contains no identifier and is never sent back to us. Clearing this website’s stored data in your browser settings deletes it whenever you wish. Our page Cookies Without the Jargon explains this in more detail.

    Hosting logs

    Our pages reach your screen through a hosting provider’s servers. To keep the service secure and working, the provider's systems automatically record basic technical details for each request, such as the IP address, the date and time, the page asked for and the type of browser. These logs are kept for a limited period and used for security and fault-finding. We do not use them to build profiles of readers or to work out who you are. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in running a safe, reliable website.

    When you email us

    An email to our inbox brings us your address, any name you sign with and the contents of the message itself. We use this only to reply and, where you point out an error, to correct the article concerned. Messages are kept for as long as the conversation is useful and then deleted, usually within a year. Your address never ends up on a newsletter or marketing list. Please do not send us personal medical records or details about other people.

    The contact form on our contact page does not send anything through the site. It simply opens your own email program with the message ready to send, so the email travels from your account in the normal way.

    Your rights

    Under data protection law, including the UK GDPR and the EU GDPR, you may ask us:

    • to tell you whether any of your personal data sits with us, and to send you a copy of it;
    • to correct anything that is inaccurate;
    • to delete your data;
    • to pause how we handle your details, or to object to our handling of them;
    • to provide your data in a portable format where that applies.

    We will reply within one month. If you are unhappy with our answer, you have the right to complain to the data protection authority in the country where you live; in the UK that is the Information Commissioner's Office.

    Children

    The site is written for adults and we do not knowingly collect information from children.

    Changes to this page

    If the way the site handles data ever changes, for example if we add a new feature, we will update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect.
